If you have a gazebo you need to take good care of it. This is not only to ensure that it looks great for a long time, but to also lengthen its life. There are many ways in which you can take good care of your unit. Some of these ways include:
Controlling the wind
You need to maintain a cleared path around your gazebo. For ideal results, leave at least 3-10 feet of width of the gazebo. You should pull or dig out any unwanted plants including climbing vines, brambles, and common weeds such as crab glass.
In addition to leaving the gazebo looking beautiful, getting rid of the weeds also protects the gazebo from plants that might cause severe damage to it. The practice also protects your family from getting poisoned by harmful plants.
Get rid of mold and mildew
If you have a canvas or vinyl gazebo, it’s common for mold or mildew to form on them. The materials not only give the gazebo an ugly look, they also tend to damage the unit. You need to clean the gazebo to maintain its great looks.
For you to do it you need to use ½ cup of household bleach, 1/4 cup of liquid laundry detergent and 1 gallon of hot water.
After making the mixture, use a sponge or rag to apply the mixture on the gazebo and allow it to soak for at least 10 minutes. You should then go ahead and wipe down all the surfaces, removing all the stains and signs of mildew and mold that might be there.
After cleaning, rinse the surfaces with water using the regular garden hose. You should avoid using chemical cleaners as they tend to damage the gazebo.
Take care of the roof
What is the nature of your roof? does it look good? For you to keep the roof of the gazebo looking great and in good condition, make a habit of inspecting it for any damage. When you have a strong storm or severe wind, you should undertake the inspection immediately.
If there are any damaged areas, replace them. For example, replace the damaged shingles and gutters. You also should ensure that the drainpipes are directed as far away from the building as much as possible. This is to prevent erosion from coming about.
Remember, the roof is the most important part of the gazebo and you should protect it with all its worth. You should treat it as the first line of defense against your unit thus take good care of it.
Undertake preventative maintenance
Just like your car, your gazebo will eventually break down if you don’t take good care of it. For you to prevent it from breaking apart, make a habit of undertaking preventative maintenance. This calls for you to inspect the gazebo at least a month for any defects it might be having and fix them.
During the inspection, tighten up any joints. You can do this by simply tapping the nail heads with a hammer. You also should drive in any nail heads that are making their way out. When you see any part of the gazebo coming apart, replace it as soon as possible.
You should note that chipped or broken wood compromises the integrity of the gazebo; therefore, when you notice it, you should fix it as soon as possible.
Paint the gazebo
Do you have a painted gazebo? You need to repaint it every 3-5 years. This not only maintains the gazebo in good shape, it also prevents it from rusting. Before you repaint the unit, fill cracks or holes with painter’s caulk. Remember to get rid of the excess.
When you are painting the gazebo, use drop cloths to cover all the plants in the area. If there are areas that you don’t want to paint, also cover them with the rags. The cool thing with painting is that you can do it with a wide range of materials. You can use a roller, spray, or brush. One of the best paints to use in the work is latex.
Replace the gazebo
A gazebo can last for too long. If the unit is constantly leaking and you don’t like the way it looks, it’s time that you think about replacing it.
